Asbestos is not a risk if it is in good condition and is not disturbed.

When asbestos materials age or become damaged i.e. when drilled, sawn, scrubbed or sanded, they can release toxic fibres into the air.

The Health and Safety ExecutiveExternal link opens in a new window explains what to look out for.

Asbestos should not be placed in your garden/food/recycling and general waste.

Disposing of asbestos

We can arrange a collection of a small amount of household asbestos waste that can safely be contained in one specially designed sack.

Please ring C2C on 029 2087 2087 to discuss your options.

There are 3 collections a year.

Large quantities/ sizes of asbestos (in excess of 600mm x 600mm) cannot be collected by the council and can only be collected by licensed companies. We are unable to recommend a company. However, please make sure they are licensed for asbestos removal and are a registered waste carrier.

Visit the Asbestos Information Centre websiteExternal link opens in a new window for more advice on disposing of asbestos safely.

Council homes

We monitor and manage asbestos in council homes to make sure it is safe. All asbestos containing material in good condition will remain in place and its condition will be reviewed regularly. If the material is damaged or is a high risk due to its location we will take immediate action to have it removed.

If you think there may be damaged asbestos in your council home, or if you are thinking of carrying out home improvements that might disturb asbestos containing material, you must contact us or call 029 2087 2087.

If you carry out any work or allow others to carry out work without written approval, you will be liable for any costs of dealing with any asbestos incidents.

Please remember that changes to the structure or the fabric of the property, without prior approval in writing, are not permitted under your tenancy agreement.
