Tree protection

Tree Preservation Orders (TPO) apply to specific trees and woodlands in Cardiff to help protect them.

It is illegal to cut down, prune, destroy or damage trees covered by a TPO, unless permission has been given by the council.

Check our map for trees with protection orders

In order to seek permission you must first complete an application for tree works subject to a TPO. (179kb PDF).

Please complete the form and return to treeprotection@cardiff.gov.uk. You can also return your form by post or in person to:

Development Management
County Hall
Cardiff

The Welsh Government has created a document offering advice on Tree Preservation Orders.

If the tree or woodland you want to work on is in a Conservation Area then you also need to apply for consent using the same form.

The Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG) Trees and Development (10.6mb PDF) gives guidance on how the Council assesses development proposals that might affect trees, woodlands and hedgerows in Cardiff.
