Dog Fouling

Dog fouling is a nuisance and can also be a health risk.
If you are a dog owner, you have a legal duty to clean up every time your dog fouls in a public place.
You do not need to put your dog poo in a special bin - it can go in any litter bin. Enforcement officers carry out daily patrols across the city.

View Proposed Dog Controls to help tackle anti-social behaviour in relation to dogs.

Dog Fouling Fines

You can face an ‘on the spot' Fixed Penalty of £100 if you are caught not cleaning up after your dog. This can increase to £1,000 if the case is referred to the Magistrates Court for prosecution.

If you have received a Fixed Penalty Notice you can pay by credit or debit card using our secure online payment system. Before you start you will need your Fixed Penalty Notice number to hand.

pay online

You have 14 days to pay a fixed penalty notice. If it is not paid, we will take further legal action through the Magistrates Courts.

You cannot appeal a Fixed Penalty Notice with the council. If you feel that you should not have received the notice, your opportunity to disagree would be through the Magistrates Court.

To help prevent dog fouling becoming a problem, please:
  • Don't let your dog roam the streets without you.
  • Always carry a bag to clean up any dog mess.
  • Dispose of the bag in any litter bin, or take it home to put in your black wheelie bin or red striped bag.

For more information on stray dogs or other concerns about dogs, please contact the Dog Warden on 029 2071 1243.
