Cardiff and Stuttgart Twin Cities

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the twinning relationship between Cardiff and Stuttgart, Cardiff hosted 43 visitors from our sister city of Stuttgart, along with 43 citizens from Cardiff for a Conference on European Integration.

The aim of the two day event was to promote the shared history of our two cities, but also to look how we might build on this to further develop transnational cooperation and civic engagement. The conference also explored different attitudes to European integration and the institutions of the European Union; how do views vary across the two cities, and across different demographics.

It was great to see representatives of all ages from both cities come together to share our histories and experiences and also to look at attitudes to European integration and EU institutions. A number of speakers gave talks on subjects including business opportunities in Europe, citizen engagement and identity.

Phil Bale opened the Conference, followed by the Chair of the Conference Gareth Berry who introduced Jan Hoppe, Partner, Solicitor & Rechtsanwalt at Gordon Dadd Solicitors, who gave a sparkling talk on the Risks and Opportunities that would potentially face the UK by leaving the European Union. The Right Honourable Alun Michael, the former Secretary of State for Wales and current South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner said a few words on his involvement in the Cardiff Stuttgart exchange that dated back to the 1980’s. that was followed by a Photomarathon around the City and concluded with a talk by Uli Hesse, the esteemed German filmmaker. Day two involved talks from both Dr Alena Drieschova on European Institutions, Citizen Engagement & The Democratic Deficit and from Dr Christian Bueger lecturer at the Department of Politics and International Relations at Cardiff University.

The conference was located at both City Hall and Cardiff and Vale College’s fantastic new Dumballs Road campus, showing our visitors both the old and the new in or wonderful city.
