The Electoral Register

The electoral register lists the names and addresses of everyone who is registered to vote. It is used to make sure only those who are entitled to, can vote.

It is also used for:
  • electoral administration purposes,
  • campaigning by candidates and parties,
  • preventing and detecting crime,
  • checking applications for loans, mortgages, or credit, and
  • jury summoning.

You can find more information about the electoral registerExternal link opens in a new window on Commissioner’s Office website.

The open register

The open register is an extract of the electoral register that is available to buy. It can be bought by any person, company, or organisation. For example, it is used by businesses and charities to confirm name and address details.

Your name and address will be included in the open register unless you ask for them to be removed.

Removing your details from the open register does not affect your right to vote, or your credit rating.

How can I be excluded, or included in the open register?

If you decide that you would not like your details included in the open register, you can opt out when registering to vote. The option to opt out is available on both the online and paper registration forms.

If you are already registered, you can change your preference at any time by emailing electoralservices@cardiff.gov.ukExternal link opens in a new window  or calling 029 2087 2087 with:

  • Address,
  • Date of birth,

Please include whether you would like to be included or removed from the open register in your email.
