Election jobs

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​We advertise election jobs in the run up to Elections held in Cardiff. 

The next election is on Thursday 2 May 2024.

There are 3 positions that we advertise. 


The Presiding Officer must have a sound knowledge of the voting procedures and is responsible for their implementation in the polling station.

The Presiding Officer needs to be at the polling station before the poll starts, from 6.30am to 10pm. 

​They are also responsible for: ​

  • The security of all the ballot papers, official paperwork, and the ballot box. 
  • Following the proper procedure for voting.
  • Preventing anyone from interfering with the voting process.
  • Instructing and supervising the work of Poll Clerks.
  • Maintaining the secrecy and security of the ballot.
  • ​Organising the layout of the polling station.
  • Opening and closing the polling station on time.
  • Accepting only valid ballot papers.
  • Making sure everyone on the election team is at the polling station.
  • Keeping all signs and notices clear, visible and in place.
  • Keeping entrances clear and tidy.
  • Communicating with the building management

The Poll Clerk helps the Presiding Officer to run the polling station. They do not have the responsibilities of the Presiding Officer, but they must know all the procedures for voting and how to deal with any problems.  

The Poll Clerk needs to be at the polling station before the poll starts, from 6.30am to 10pm. You cannot leave the premises during this time.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Following any of your Presiding Officers instructions throughout the day and after the close of the poll.
  • Maintaining the secrecy and security of the ballot.
  • Helping with the layout of the polling station and monitoring any queues, acting as a greeter if necessary.
  • Checking that people are eligible to vote at this polling station.   
  • Accepting only valid ballot papers.     
  • Keeping entrances clear and tidy.
  • Keeping all signs and notices clear, visible and in place.

The Counting Assistant will need to follow instructions given to you before the count. 

You will need to be at the counting station before the count starts and until the count finishes. You cannot leave the premises during this time and smoking breaks are not allowed.

Your responsibilities are to:

  • Always act impartially and handle material respectfully and confidentially.
  • Verify the ballot papers by first unfolding and separating as per instructions from your senior. 

  • Count quickly and effectively into batches are per instructions. Finger stalls will be available. 
  • Recount papers if asked to by your senior.  
  • Wait patiently anytime your senior goes to the Control Table to discuss verification totals for the box your team is currently working on. 
  • Adhere to all rules and restrictions in place that have been set b​​​y your senior.
